Hotel Study for Paid Market Research Checklist: Invitation, Consent, and Compensation

Use this checklist to vet hotel study invites, confirm consent and pay terms, and avoid fee and check scams.

A hotel study for paid market research is a structured project that pays travelers for feedback on stays, service, or booking choices. Use this checklist to check the invitation, consent terms, and pay rules before you share personal data or accept a spot. Hotel projects range from short surveys to multi-night evaluations with interviews and diaries. The same three checks apply to each format: clear enrollment terms, real choice to continue or quit, and written pay terms.

What should a real invitation include?

Legitimate invitations state that participation is voluntary and describe the general purpose and nature of the work. The Insights Association requires this disclosure plus relevant parameters and requirements before enrollment in the Code of Standards.

Save the invite and compare it with what the screener tells you. Look for dates, location or online format, time needed, eligibility rules, and how to contact the team.

  • participation is voluntary, not a job offer or booking guarantee
  • purpose, tasks, time, and visit count
  • who qualifies, what to bring, and how to reach the researcher

Researchers must obtain consent for participation and personal-data collection. The Insights Association also affirms your right to refuse, stop, or ask to access or correct retained personal data. Widener University IRB guidance says a complete disclosure addresses purpose, steps and duration, and foreseeable risks or discomforts.

It also addresses benefits or alternatives, confidentiality limits, compensation and injury terms, contacts, and no penalty for refusal or withdrawal. The Insights Association Participant Bill of Rights calls for clear risks, benefits, data use, and freedom to withdraw at any time. It also calls for accessible materials, reduced fatigue, and fair incentives.

How should pay be described?

Incentives should encourage participation only, not shape answers. The Insights Association requires advance disclosure of type, amount, conditions, and payment schedule at fair levels tied to effort and audience.

Levels must avoid biasing responses or inducing concealment. For multi-night or multi-visit hotel work, ask if pay is prorated. Federal HHS guidance warns that pay only at completion can pressure people to stay, so pay should track completed parts in the HHS recommendation.

  • amount and form of payment
  • conditions and payment schedule
  • prorating rule if you leave early

Do you owe tax on study pay?

All study payments count as taxable income, including cash, checks, gift cards, and prizes. The IRS requires payers to report 2026 calendar-year totals of $2,000 or more and collect Social Security number or tax ID.

Smaller amounts stay taxable, as explained in the IRS filing guidance. Keep your own log of dates, amounts, and payment form. Ask who issues payment and what tax form you will receive.

Which hotel offers are scams?

Legitimate hotel or mystery-shopping research never charges upfront certification or access fees and never asks you to deposit a check and wire money back. The FTC brought cases over $99 to $99.95 fees for worthless certification in the FTC press release.

Michigan consumer guidance warns that bounced scammer checks leave the depositor liable. Refuse any task that asks for upfront money, check deposits, or wire-backs.
